llms.txt is a trendy file meant to help AI models understand your site – but as of today there is no evidence it improves visibility in AI search engines. It is cheap and harmless, yet its real value lies with agentic tools (Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot), not ChatGPT in search mode. It is worth having, but without illusions and not at the expense of real work on your content.
A lot of hype has grown around llms.txt this year, so I gathered the concrete data and say plainly what it means.
What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a simple Markdown text file placed at /llms.txt in the root of the domain. It contains a short description of the site and links to its key pages – a bit like a table of contents prepared specifically for AI models. The idea is sensible: instead of making the model dig through the whole site, you hand it an organised map.
The catch is that a good idea is not yet the same as a working standard.
Hype versus data
This is where the sobering part begins. The data gathered in 2026 is fairly clear:
- adoption is moderate – depending on the study, roughly 2% to 10% of sites have an llms.txt, and a large share of the files are empty stubs generated by plugins,
- AI search engines barely fetch it – in monitoring of over 500 million AI bot visits, only 408 reached directly for llms.txt, which is negligible,
- Google officially does not support it – a Google representative (Gary Illyes) confirmed in 2025 that Google does not use llms.txt and does not plan to change that,
- citation studies show no improvement – in one analysis, 8 out of 9 sites recorded no measurable change in traffic after implementing the file.
Put plainly: if someone is selling you llms.txt as a way to jump your visibility in ChatGPT or Google AI, they are selling hope, not fact.
Where llms.txt genuinely helps
This does not mean the file is useless – it just helps somewhere other than the hype claims. In practice, it is reached for by:
- agentic tools and AI editors – Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, Windsurf,
- MCP servers and assistants built into products,
- increasingly, internal assistants searching documentation.
So if you have extensive technical documentation, or your audience works with AI developer tools, llms.txt can make their life easier. That is a real, if narrower, value than “SEO for AI”.
Is it worth having?
My honest answer: yes, but with the right mindset.
- If you can do it quickly and cheaply – go ahead. It is harmless, and as the standard matures it may start to matter more.
- Do not count on an effect in AI search engines here and now. The data does not point to it.
- Do not do it at the expense of real work. If you have to choose between an hour on llms.txt and an hour tidying up your content and structured data, choose the latter.

How to make an llms.txt on WordPress
If you want to add it, it is straightforward:
- Prepare a text file: at the top a heading with the name and a one-sentence description of the business, then sections with links to the key pages and short descriptions.
- Place it at
https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt– as a static file or via a plugin that generates it. - Keep it up to date. An out-of-date file is worse than none.
Keep it concise and honest – this is not the place for marketing slogans, just a clear map of the site.
Honestly – I have one on my own site
On my own site I have an llms.txt, but I treat it exactly as described above: as a cheap extra, not a foundation. The foundation is how the content is built, whether I have structured data, and whether I am not blocking AI crawlers by accident. llms.txt is the cherry, not the cake.
